Hello and Welcome! Iām Sonia.
My pronouns are she/they and Iām an actor, writer, musician, and teaching artist who is proudly born and based in Chicago. My alma mater is Butler University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Theatre. I am actively invested in deepening my understanding of performance, and have studied abroad at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and the Moscow Art Theatre School (MXAT).
Being biracial and growing up in a dual-faith home, I am committed to navigating historical and cultural barriers, using performance to highlight the humanity in underrepresented groups. Theatre is art of the human experience, making it the perfect vehicle for initiating tangible change within communities. Thatās why Iām passionate about accessibility, anti-racism, and devising new works to break the culture of silence and make empowerment possible. I aim to promote these values directly to Chicagoās youth: I am currently the Education Programs Coordinator at Court Theatre, and am a teaching artist with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Goodman Theatre and Playmakers Lab (where I am a company member).
Youāll often see me holding a puppet at beloved TYA theatres about town, or singing my face off at storefronts. I can also bring you to tears through Shakespeare and gut-punching contemporary works (donāt worry, Iāll be crying, too). For more info about where Iāve worked in Chicago, check out my resume. If youāre curious what folks are saying about my performances, peruse some reviews.
I am an avid writer, vocalist, and cellist. When Iām not performing, I love reading novels, practicing awareness cultivation through the study of Nondual Saiva Tantra, and digging through Spotify for new music.
