Hello and Welcome! I’m Sonia.
My pronouns are she/they and I’m an actor, writer, musician, and teaching artist who is proudly born and based in Chicago. My alma mater is Butler University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Theatre. I am actively invested in deepening my understanding of performance, and have studied abroad at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and the Moscow Art Theatre School (MXAT).
Being biracial and growing up in a dual-faith home, I am committed to navigating historical and cultural barriers, using performance to highlight the humanity in underrepresented groups. Theatre is art of the human experience, making it the perfect vehicle for initiating tangible change within communities. That’s why I’m passionate about accessibility, anti-racism, and devising new works to break the culture of silence and make empowerment possible. I aim to promote these values directly to Chicago’s youth: I am a teaching artist with Court Theatre, Filament Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, and Playmakers Lab (where I am a company member).
You’ll often see me holding a puppet at beloved TYA theatres about town, or singing my face off at storefronts. I can also bring you to tears through Shakespeare and gut-punching contemporary works (don’t worry, I’ll be crying, too). For more info about where I’ve worked in Chicago, check out my resume. If you’re curious what folks are saying about my performances, peruse some reviews.
I am an avid writer, vocalist, and cellist. When I’m not performing, I love reading novels, practicing awareness cultivation through the study of Nondual Saiva Tantra, and digging through Spotify for new music.
